No post from me about excellent copywriting would be complete without mentioning the folks at Velocity Partners. A B2B marketing agency out of the U.K., we've featured co-founder Doug Kessler's SlideShares (like this one on why marketers need to rise above the deluge of "crappy" content) time and again on this blog because he's the master of word economy.

For example, with a stock exchange you can only trade a particular company’s stock (the actual currency in which your account is managed). That means that no matter how much of a company’s stock you own, you cannot buy the stock on an exchange and keep it in your account. Additionally, it is very difficult to do this, even with a specialized brokerage account.
But I have found my approach can be confusing for people and they have a tough time engaging. I’m experimenting now with blog commenting and guest posting in various niche blogs with links to landing pages unique to the kind of audience I’d expect to be interacting at those sites. I’m hoping this narrows the focus a bit for my audience, giving them more value for the average of 7:36 they hang around on my site. 🙂
The most important tip for this phase of SEO copywriting is to just write. People often have trouble coming up with the first sentence (or the first paragraph for that matter). But, at this stage, you can skip writing that first paragraph altogether. Just put down a couple of words referring to the content that your first paragraph should contain and start writing the second paragraph. Beginnings and endings are easier to write once you’ve fleshed out the main body of your post.
Practise less is more. Content should be a like a good waiter – conspicuous when needed, but not pushy. Some of the best newsletters and promotional emails are sent only once a week, or even just once a month. And you’ll know when someone's spent some time crafting it; it’ll feel more considered. On the other hand, getting sent an email every day feels impersonal, robotic and spammy. A little bit of absence does make the heart grow fonder. 

But it’s true. Copywriting without content to deepen the engagement in some way, to educate or entertain, is a let down. These days you have be what your audience is interested in. Video, white paper, game, demo, app, whatever, your copy has to drive to something that’s relevant to them, not you or the company you’re writing for, and delivers some value (more info, a different perspective, maybe just a bigger laugh).
When you reference another website’s content, make sure you hyperlink back to that site. It’s good internet etiquette, and you’d want the same courtesy. Always cite your sources, even if you’re afraid it’ll send your web traffic to another site — and you can always choose the “open link in another window” option if you’re that concerned about keeping your traffic.

Read the blog as a holistic piece of content. Think about how the overall structure fits together, and if each point flows onto the next. Consider if there are any sections that feel over or under-serviced, giving the piece an unbalanced feel. Does the introduction draw you in? Is the ending (we call this the ‘kicker’) punchy or attention-grabbing? Make some notes as you go.
