A Open Suggestion for phpBB

My buddy recently revived a forum he maintained for a number of friends with common interests that utilizes phpBB. As forums are a relatively active community, and I hadn't used phpBB in a while, I was expecting to be able to subscribe to a particular category of postings, or even individual threads using RSS.

Sadly, after years of open-source revisions, there is no native support for this. After a bit of googling, I found that there are some independently created mods for this, but they appear to be dated (2003) and, well... dated (RSS .92).

I'm wondering if I'm the only sap that would find value in being able to subscribe to categories in a forum so that I can see posts at a glance. Thoughts?

It might depend on a the mod being used a phpbb forum I visit offers these params to customize the feed: f=x - forum id. Use data only from this forum to output RSS. t=1 - only new topics (first messages in topic). Default - 0. c=x - feed items count. topic=x - view topic 'x' only and PDF is right, friends don't let friends use phpbb. punbb, vanilla, bbpress...
